With Merrick, a witch from New Orleans, author Anne Rice created one of the most mysterious and intriguing novel characters ever – at least in my humble opinion. She represents a confident and independent woman with a tendency towards melancholy, and who has a strong foible for all things beautiful, such as art, literature and music. Merrick also has a predilection for all things beautiful, such as art, literature and music. She also collects Rolls Royce, drinks expensive rum and wears one fragrance only: Chanel N°22. A perfume with powerful ingredients such as aldehydes, neroli, lily, tuberose, ylang-ylang, jasmine, nutmeg and vanilla can be overwhelming sometimes.
Whilst reading this book as a very romantic twenty-something, I immersed myself deeper and deeper into Merrick's world, longing for a similar lifestyle. Naturally, as an intern, I didn't have the means to start a Rolls Royce collection or drink expensive rum when going out - which is why I started saving money for bespoke perfume. It was absolutely worth it, since every time I spritzed Chanel N°22 on, I felt a little bit more mysterious than usual.
But as time goes by and I am now focussing on organic beauty brands, I had to find an olfactory alternative. Luckily Pauline Rochas (Pauline is the granddaughter of the legendary couturier Marcel Rochas who created the iconic perfume House of Rochas Femme for his wife and muse – the fabulous Hélène Rochas) followed in her grandfather’s footsteps to create a world via scent andestablished the brand The Seven Collection for her own brand Pauline R. In her fragrances, she combines her rich heritage of fine French perfumery with ancient Eastern wisdom, bridging the gap between modernity and tradition.
The Seven Collection is a layered fragrant journey that awakens the spirit one chakra at a time. When written on the body, each perfume has the power of taking you on a journey - to a place of healing and unleashing the vitality of the chakras for a fulfilled life. After having discovered the Seven Collection, I immediately fell in love with Le Deuxième Perfume, which represents the Sacral Chakra. Similar as with Chanel N°22 Le Deuxième Perfume's ingredients ylang-ylang, sandalwood and labdanum (a tree raisin) have the power to make me feel as sensual and mysterious as I imagined Merrick in my twenties and takes me immediately on a olfactory journey to New Orleans. Sigh.
This is why I wonder if you've ever experienced a similar feeling by reading a novel, watching a movie or listening to a song and that made you incorporate some of its elements into your everyday life? If so, which ones? I am looking forward to your stories which I encourage you to share with us in the comment section of our Instagram page.
From my heart to yours,
Irène
